Music Day

Today children took part in our first Music Day; a day packed with exciting musical activities. Throughout the day different classes attended up to five musical sessions, such as samba drumming, dance, singing and lyric writing. All children attended an action packed body percussion workshop with Beat Goes On music, and children in Key Stage 2 also created their own songs on the iPads using Garageband. Children in Key Stage 1 enjoyed their first time playing the ukulele and also learnt to play simple songs on the keyboard and glockenspiel.

Welcome Back

Welcome back for the start of a new year! We have lots of exciting music related activities planned and are looking forward to sharing them on the blog this year.

In music lessons this half term children in the EYFS will take part in Caterpillar Music sessions, children in Year 2 will be learning the djembe and Year 3 children will be continuing to develop their ukulele skills. In Year 4, children will use the Just Play resources from Musical Futures as part of a scheme to develop their band skills and Year 6 will take part in a scheme of work we have designed around the Trinity College London session skills. Children in both Year 5 classes will be learning to play a new song, with Peregrine class learning Stitches, by Shawn Mendes, and Swallow class learning Can’t Stop the Feeling, by Justin Timberlake.

This half term the new Norbridge Rocks band will be starting to learn two new songs, Human by Rag’n’Bone Man and Just Can’t Get Enough by Depeche Mode. A group of eight children from Years 4 and 5 will be the first to start our newly designed Norbridge Music Award and the Young Voices choir will begin practising the songs and dances for their concert at the Motorpoint Arena in January.

Keep in touch with what we are learning across the school on our blog and twitter account @NorbridgeMusic.

Autumn Term

We have had a very exciting first term in music this year which has included lots of new opportunities! Children in Year 2 have received their first taste of both whole class ukulele and djembe lessons, Year 3 has also learnt djembe for the first time and continued to build on their ukulele learning.

Children in Year 4 have been trialing the Just Play approach from Musical Futures, where they have been learning to play chords and rhythms on electric and bass guitars, keyboards, ukuleles and djembes. They have also learnt the song Photograph by Ed Sheeran as their first whole class band.

In Year 5, children learnt and performed an amazing version of Snow Patrol’s song Chasing Cars, before moving on to start composing their own songs using Garageband for the iPad as part of the composition challenge run by Transformance Music.

Children in Year 6 have learnt both Smoke on the Water, by Deep Purple, and Happy, by Pharrell Williams as a whole class. At their first blogathon, they also used Garageband to write their own moody score to the opening sequence of the film Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.

Outside of lessons the Norbridge Rocks band has been learning to play Up, by Olly Murs; Young Voices club have been rehearsing their songs and dance moves and are looking forward to the concert at the Motorpoint Arena in January, and the Christmas choir have performed at Bassetlaw Hospital, Poplars Church, the school Christmas Fayre, the Worksop Christmas Market at Jubilee Nursing Home.

All in all it has been a very busy and exciting term and we are looking forward to more exciting activities in the Spring term!

First Music Lessons

This week children across the school were excited to start their first music lessons of the year. There were lots of exciting firsts for all of the classes!

On Thursday both Year 4 classes experienced their first taste of the whole class band lessons; their first chance to play either a keyboard, electric guitar, bass guitar, djembe or vocals within the whole class setting.

Children in Year 5 and Year 6 continued to build on their whole class band knowledge as they started to learn a new song. Year 5 are learning Chasing Cars, by Snow Patrol, and even had the chance to practise their music on the newly refurbished school bus!

The Year 6 children channeled their inner rock star and made the most of the beautiful weather as they started to learn Smoke on the Water, by Deep Purple, and practise it outside!

Music lessons continued on Friday when both Year 2 classes impressed Mr Bellingham in their first lessons on the djembe, and Year 3 children continued from where they left off last year with their ukulele lessons. Individual lessons also continued with Mr Oakton.

We are already looking forward to next week’s music lessons and have lots of exciting activities planned for the coming weeks!
